An investment in emotional health

Stress

‘Stress is what we feel when we think we've lost control of events. There are very few situations in modern working life where this response is useful. Most situations benefit from a calm, rational, controlled and socially sensitive approach’

Stress and mental health issues are the biggest cause of sickness absence.  Addressing this problem saves companies 30% of the costs involved in absenteeism, staff turnover and reduced productivity.  Stress causes breakdowns in relationships, shuts down options and if left untreated can lead to serious physical or mental illness.

Work can have a positive impact on your health and well-being. Healthy and well-motivated employees can have an equally positive impact on the productivity and effectiveness on a business.

Equine Involvement Therapy provides a viable and enduring solution to stress.

Employers and employees are both working towards the same goal, to create an effective and productive environment and to earn a living.  To do this, both management and workforce need to be in balance.

When the emotional or physical health of individuals is impaired, the balance is disrupted on a personal and a business level and the harmonious flow of well being, productivity and general performance can no longer function.

Whilst the prevention of stress is obviously the ideal, Hopethruhorses offers an alternative solution – a highly successful intervention.

How does EIT work with stress?

The beautiful and peaceful Cotswold countryside and conflict free and non- judgmental company of gentle, naturally kept horses, combine to provide a perfect environment.

Experienced in stress management, facilitator Jo Corfield guides her clients through simple interactions with the horses and by observing the horses’ responses; they can see themselves clearly for the first time.

Horses act like a mirror of our inner state. Connecting and communicating with them and learning to read their responses and adjust ours, provides a powerful means of releasing stress, destructive and unhelpful thoughts and unwanted emotions. This accepting and thought provoking approach quietens and transforms the mind, helps us see life from a calm, open and positive perspective.

As sessions progress a sense of equilibrium is restored.  Tension and feelings of anxiety, anger and frustration are replaced by inspiration, relaxed confidence and inner strength. An understanding of how to keep our minds in the present, free of restrictive memories of the past and doubts about the future, enable us to communicate effectively, articulating thoughts and feelings without frustration, fear or anger.

A stressed or frightened horse responds to fear by fleeing - they run from perceived danger until they feel safe and then stop.  Having reached a safe distance their stress response dissipates and they relax. They are constantly aware of danger, but in the absence of an immediate threat they choose to remain peaceful, conserve energy and enjoy what they are experiencing. By learning from them we can do the same.

At the end of a course of Equine Involvement Therapy clients will feel, positive, calm and confident; able to communicate freely with empathy, peace of mind, and a sense of value.  Early signs of stress will be managed effectively and therefore the problems of poor health and burn out avoided. The return to work will feel natural and the balance restored.

Equine Involvement Therapist Jo Corfield and her herd of naturally kept horses and ponies have successfully helped many adults and young people return to full emotional health.
